Dead and dying boards

Has anyone else noticed that these Catholic boards are dying off. I noticed this on the other Catholic board on PP. Since iVillage changed the format the three once active Catholic boards that had sometimes 10 or 15 posts a day have died off. I sometimes see several days go by without a single posts here? Where has everyone gone?

You do have a point that there may be many people that view these boards and never post. Buy I have been posting here for four years and prior to the change there were what seemed to be at least a dozen new posts every day with some heated or at least, warmed up, discussions.

I think you misunderstood. I used the board change as a point of referrence in time not the reason for the decline of activity. There were just many more names that simply have not shown up on the boards but were very active a year ago.

Perhaps I did misunderstand.

However, your post title is Dead and Dying Boards and the only reference you site is the change in format.

"what precisely were you saying?"

Well, I am sure that whatever Br. Rich was saying, it was nothing that deserved such vitriol!

It is true that the drop-off in activity here coincided with the board change. While it is impossible to prove cause and effect, may I posit a theory?

This board serves as a source for information and discussion on important issues. In my time posting, it has been an interesting, nice group of people, but never had the chummy atmosphere of the baby boards or such. For many on the board, it was one of many Catholic forums in which they participated, including forums IRL.

The format change could have caused some people to simply rely more on other sources that did not require adapting to a new way of doing things. That is completely understandable, considering how generally busy many posters were with the rest of their lives. With fewer posters, fewer interesting issues came up that would incite posting. Thus the attrition in posts.

Just a theory -- but probably as good as any other.

Polly, I think you hit the nail on the head. And I know for a fact that some boards, including "mommy" boards have almost completely died because of the format change. Their members either couldn't or didn't want to adapt so they took their group to another site with easier to navigate boards.

It is easier to get a lot of traffic with debate topics, people always want to come back and see what others have posted in response to their opinions, but when we had a lot of debate on this board people complained that it wasn't supportive enough and that we were scaring lurkers away from Catholicism. I think it's too bad, there's no reason the board can't be both a place for support and a place to debate since there are plenty of issues to debate in the Church.

I know I personally don't post here much just because there doesn't seem to be much going on except for straight Q&A most days. No offense to the cl, I know how time consuming it is trying to raise a family and keep a board going. Coming up with new and interesting things to post each week can be a challenge.

As for myself, I've been around both ParentsPlace and ParentSoup Boards for a long time and I still do stop in at least once a day (sometimes twice) but I lack the time to spend much time with discussion on any message boards anywhere. I do try to post when I can do so quickly to either share or answer something.

It was a fair question I posed in reply to his post.
