Dr's appt was today....

So today was my follow up appt to find out what my lab results showed and what he wanted to do. I have to say that it wasn't exactly what I was expecting; but then again, I didn't really know what to expecting.

The blood test done showed that I had a high level of aldosterone and lower level of cortisol.
My potassium levels etc were all normal. I need to have an MRI of my kidney and adrenal glands to see if there is decreased blood flow to either of the kidneys which would cause it to over secrete aldosterone. They are also going to look and see if there is a growth of any kind on either of the adrenal glands which could also produce too much aldosterone. The increase in aldosterone could be what is causing my blood pressure to be too high. The aldosterone and cortisol manage how the body retains fluids, sodium etc to manage blood pressure. If the kidneys aren't receiving enough blood, they tell they adrenal glands to produce more aldosterone which makes the body retain fluids thus increasing blood pressure.

So, not sure what to make of it just yet. My blood pressure began increasing out of the blue last year when I've always had normal blood pressure. And he said with my young age its worth looking into. So labs will be repeated about a week before the MRI which will probably be sometime next month. I have to call Monday to schedule that.

When I told my mom she kinda sighed in a way that was almost like she thinks it could be serious, but she told me not to worry too much about this until the tests are done. Which I have plenty to keep me busy and mind off it.

On a side note, Dr. L. did agree to fill out the paperwork for the DMV to try to get me a disabled placard to use while at school. He's not sure how successful it will be, but he did agree that it would be useful to help manage stress and reduce flare ups.

I hope the doctor is able to get a diagnosis for you soon. I do agree with your mom about trying not to worry about it right now since it will only stress you out. I know that's easier said than done, though. I'm glad you have a lot to keep you busy, that has to help. Hopefully, your doctor's forms will be enough to get you the tag for your car. Please keep us updated on how it goes!

How's CJ doing?

Megan,

I hope the doctors are able to pinpoint the cause of your high blood pressure.
