Easter Vigil help needed.

Yes, I know, I am a crappy board member, but I have also been a bad Catholic but I am apparently still wanted/needed at the church and I am slowly getting back into the swing of things. Thus why I need some help.

I am still Music Minster... I don't get why b/c I still feel very strongly that I am very under qualified. Anyway, yesterday the liturgy council had a meeting regarding Holy week and everything seems okay EXCEPT for Easter Vigil. Our key piano player will be out of town!! Father T would rather not have one of the other choirs lead that night b/c... well... in the past they were not up to par for these important/special masses.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here has been to a 'different' kind of Vigil. I have only been to so many... one being when I converted and three others under the last Music Minister and she frankly used the same music for those three masses and I and everyone else is sorta sick of it. I am hoping to round up a bunch of musicians. But here, the schools have an Easter break for a week so many go out of town.... Oh, it just sucks. Once again I sure regret quiting piano in grade 7... *sigh*

I shamefully admit to never having sat through an ENTIRE Easter Vigil.

I've had young kids for so many years that I've never been to an Easter Vigil Mass... I grew up in a time when EAster Sunday was the focus and my dh and I have maintained that with our children.
A few years ago our youngest son made his FHC during the Easter Vigil Mass but it was not the RCIA/Vigil Mass... our priest was retired and so he did a normal Sat night type Mass without all the 'extras'

I've been to a few Easter Vigils. (because my kids are usually serving at them....know how hard it is to find altar servers for a Mass that is over an hour and a half??

Couldn't tell you *what* they sing, but it is always beautiful, uplifting, fitting...>>>

I am not one for 'special' music during Mass because special music tends to be unsingable by the congregation... and song during Mass is supposed to include ALL (not just the choir)....I don't like when our choir starts singing in parts so that the rest of us can't hear the melody line to sing along :(

I'm not sure what you're asking.

I love the Easter Vigil service. Even though it's sooooo long, it's my favorite. I love the Litany of the Saints, it's beautiful.

How different do you want to make it? I like simple changes the best. Like, using a piano instead of an organ, adding a flute or harp, etc. I don't think I would want to make it too different because we are creatures of habit, and too much change might be too much for some members.

Have you come up with any ideas yet?

This has been a total nightmare. I contacted one choir leader today and he didn't even think about it, he just tried to pawn it on to the other choir leaders. The one leader who hesitantly agreed to do it, isn't all that pleased about it b/c she is doing a Good Friday Mass as well as the Easter Sunday. (note to self, get the first leader to do Easter day instead....Hmm....) She is also going to do Holy Thursday! Now my problem is, Father isn't very confident in this other choir b/c they have made mistakes in the past. I'm not crazy about this choir b/c they are SO...... SLOW!! So I am sure Father will have words with me when I tell him the 'good' news.

I wasn't looking for something different fore say, I was wondering if anyone has gone to one what didn't have piano and had guitars instead or something like that. Father does want a more traditional Mass meaning the old traditional Hymns... like someone mentioned, ones that everyone will know.

I am singing the Exsultet (God help me please).... that is if the Leader didn't have someone else in mind. This should be fun. *grin*

Anyway, thank you all for your support!! The pressure really is on as it is the very first Easter in this new Church. I would love to say I can handle it all on my own, and Yeah!! What an accomplishment, but really, there is only so much a novice can do!! But I am learning!!! *grin*
