First Confession

Ian made his first confession yesterday. He'd been taking classes on Saturday mornings for the past few weeks. The night before, he made a list of things he wanted to mention during his confession. We got to the church pretty early. They had 5 or 6 priests there to hear the kids and try to get through all of them in an hour. Ian got to confess to the priest who can't hear very well. He forgot what his penance was supposed to be (he didn't bring a pen to write it in his notebook), so he told me he made up his own that he thinks is close to what the priest told him to do but said he might have added an extra Hail Mary or Glory Be to it.
Too funny about making up his own penance!
Celebrate that sacrament and keep it happening on a regular basis. We used to go for ice cream afterwards. If they get used to it when they are young, it won't be such a shock when they are teens and have real things that need to be confessed! I tried to take mine once a season when they were little. That has dwindled as they've gotten older, but still try to get them there for Lent and Advent. Some day they may recoginize it for the gift that it is!
We were out of town (at Disney World) when my youngest child's class made their First Confession. Consequently, we had to catch Father at a convenient time (after Mass one Saturday) for A to make his confession. It was no mystery to either who was on the other side of the confessional, but my child chose the anonymous side. When they came out, and DS went to say his penance, the priest came to chat with us. He assured us that DS had done a very good job and then relayed his amusement that he had started out the confession by tapping on the screen/wall between them and saying "Hello?? Hello?? Is this thing on?" ROFL.
Another amusing story - a few years later. This priest would give as his penance "One Our Father." No matter the sins, no matter the sinner....one Our Father. My other son was the last of the 3 of us to go, so after he came out of the confessional and knelt for a few minutes, I leaned over and asked if he was ready to go. "I think I have about 57 more minutes," he said. I was puzzled for a minute. And then I realized that he must have gotten the "One HOUR Father". LOL!
Fast forward a few years later. I have teenagers, and in an effort to get them past the "I fought with my brother, I lied to my parents, and I took my friend's pencil without asking" list of sins, I had downloaded a couple of the confession apps and put them on their iPod Touches. I showed them how to use them, and one was very interested. He checked off his list and all was well until he got into the confessional and couldn't make it work. The priest asked what the delay was, and he told him he couldn't get the list to open on his ipod. Our priest said that was the first time he'd heard that one!
