Only one godparent is required who must be a practicing Catholic at least 16 years old who has received the sacrament of Confirmation. There can be no more than two godparents -one male and one female. They must be practicing Catholics at least 16 years years old and received the sacrament of Confirmation. One of the godparents may also be a baptized member of another Christian faith who is in good standing with their church. This person would be called a Christian Witness. Godparents (or a Christian Witness) may be represented by a proxy if they cannot be present at the baptism.
Parishes may request a certificate from the godparents' parish if they are not members of the parish the baby will be baptized in, as verification that they are qualified to act as godparents.
