This is just a silly little question my bff and I were talking about the other day.

On Ash Wednesday I took all five of the kiddos to 8 am Mass, and we met up with my friend and her 5 kiddos.

Well as long as you're not wiping the whole cross off your forehead you should be ok. The large amount of ash you got is probably because the priest's thumb replenished the stash as you stepped up to get your ashes. I've had barely a mark in the past, and other times, I was getting extra ash sprinklage all over my face and having to carefully brush it out of the way. As you said, it's the stray ash, not the primary spot.

May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

What you did was just fine. We go to the 7pm mass on Ash Wednesday, so all the ashes are washed off our faces very soon after we get them. They're blessed, but they're not the Blessed Sacrament, so you're OK. ;)
