St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix is no longer a Catholic hospital because the hospital and it's parent company, Catholic Healthcare West, "are not committed to following the teachings of the Catholic church."

In November, 2009 the doctors at the hospital performed an abortion on an 11 week pregnancy.

For me this is one of those situations that is not black or white, but completely gray.

If the pregnancy wasn't terminated, then then

It is impossible to tell if the hospital representatives are being completely truthful. Pulmonary hypertension is treatable. Were all avenues exhausted? There's no denying it can be fatal, but I would expect a Catholic hospital that was serious about a commitment to life to share details of other options that were tried, and a responsible reporter would share that as well.

It doesn't sound analogous to uterine cancer to me, in which treatment of the patient results in the death of the fetus, but the death of the fetus was not the reason for the procedure. If she had been treated surgically for the hypertension and the child's death had resulted, you could make the case. Was her case truly beyond treatment?

I'm not comfortable with Catholic hospitals performing direct abortions.
