Any ideas on how to get involved in parish life? Do parishes have lists of volunteer positions?

No doubt every parish has an EXTENSIVE list of things for volunteers to get involved in. I know ours does. First I would suggest thinking about what kinds of things you'd be interested in....music, youth, teach religious ed., helping with a parish newsletter or web site, helping with Children's Liturgy of the Word, washing/ironing altar linens, the baptism program, family ministry (if your parish has one), spiritual life (Bible Study, Cursillo, retreats, Life in the Spirit), singles group, Confirmation Team, Marriage Prep, RCIA, at Christmas time - the Giving Tree, or the homebound ministry, food pantry, St. Vincent de Paul. Your parish might have others. Once you narrow down the type of things you like chances are the people in that group would be happy to have you.

Depending on the size of your Parish, there should be information spelled out in your bulletin or simply, pick up the phone and call your church..There are loads of ministries, committees at my Parish.

Try calling the parish office and asking for a list of committees and events and who is in charge, and then call those that interest you. My parish has a volunteer fair once a year, and just completed a time and talent survey, but not all parishes do that. You can also look for little ways to get involved via the bulletin, which may help you make connections to the bigger ways that interest you most.

Good luck!

You can start by looking for little ways to be involved. I started with the Christmas Posada. The whole family got to do something. My little ones were angels. I stuffed the candy bags and pinatas. We made a lot of friends this way. I am now thinking about voluteering as a substitute teacher in the CCD program.
