How is your school year going?

Ian just finished his third week of school (Lucy too), and I think this is the week where everything finally fell into place.  The kids are going to bed and waking up at normal times.  The only thing I might need to do is reinstate naps for Lucy since she turns into a bear at about 2:30 on the days where she has school (M/W/F mornings).

How is your family adjusting to the school year?

...and to think my experiences at a Catholic prep school in the 80s at the time convinced me that most Catholics did not care about music education!  While I am a Catholic who today takes God most seriously, my life's work is as a musician, and the whole Catholic school music thing almost had me convert to Methodism in High School.  True Story.

The cello is a GREAT choice!  For one, strings provide some of the best music-making opportunities, and non-violin strings are even better when you consider the availability of spots in orchestras.  Don't worry about the size- all string instruments come in multiple sizes, and if your son is nine and small, they will probably assign him a 1/2 size (maybe 3/4, but not if he's really small.)

I love the cello. One kind of cool thing about the larger instruments is the kids aren't expected to bring them to/from school. The kids who play the viola or violin will bring the entire instrument while the kids who choose the cello or bass will only need to bring their bows. That's how they do it here, anyway.

Does the teacher choose the instrument for them? Or do they make the list of choices to help the teacher match them to the instrument that might work best?
