CJ's FHC is coming up and I'll be sending the invitations out in a few weeks.

Megan,
I don't think there is an easy answer... I wouldn't put the name of a gift/book shop on the invitation...... I think if he receives gifts that are inappropriate you have your ds send a nice thank you letter... and then you try to return/exchange them or you pass them along to a thrift shop.....
I would not think of giving a Catholic gift to my non-Catholic family/friends... but folks don't always think that way

...just last week my 14 year celebrated Confirmation (FHC is coming up in April for my youngest)...my son's protestant relatives gave cash in side of Confirmation cards...though...some of his protestant relatives did not realize that we celebrate these occasions with gifts of any kind...I don't think I'd mention a specific gift or store; I'd just roll with the flow...congratulations on the FHC...what an exciting time...

I second the go-with-the-flow attitude.

I agree with the others. If something doesn't fit with Catholic teaching, you can return it, but there's a good chance that generic Christian gifts will still work with what you're teaching. If someone asks for suggestions, you can point them to something specific.

Around here, the standard communion gift is cash. Peter and I give

I agree with everyone else. I wouldn't put it on the invitation, but I would mention the store if they asked for gift ideas.

My kids got some gifts for their baptisms that I considered, well I don't want to say "inappropriate" because that seems too strong, but I can't think of a better word. It wasn't intentional, but I just set them aside to re-gift since I didn't know where they came from and they were nice items.

Congrats, CJ!!
