This summer is going by ridiculously fast!
Do you have any plans for the 4th?
We're staying close to home. My ILs came and picked Ian up yesterday. They were taking him up to Michigan to visit a light house. They'll be gone until sometime Saturday. So, it's just Lucy and me today. We're going to the zoo this afternoon. She says she's "so cited!" There's a small zoo about 15 minutes away. It's not too exciting for older kids, but it's got enough to keep the younger ones interested. There are going to be fireworks at the lake (Lake Michigan) tonight. I don't know if we're going or not. Brian hates crowds, and our neighbors said last year it took them over an hour just to get out of the parking lot! I'd like to go, but we'll see. On the 4th, we'll probably stay home and share our stash of fireworks with the neighbors like we did last year. Everyone had a lot of fun, and I hope we do again this weekend!
I'm unintentionally having people over. ;-)
I invited my sister to cook out after the parade, because she goes to the parade in my town, and if I didn't invite her, her inlaws would expect to be entertained at her house. She does that for every major holiday and most minor ones, and I wanted to give her a break. I invited her last year, before I knew I would be swamped with work this year.
Then another sister called and said her husband was working and she was looking for something to do (hint, hint), so of course I invited her.
Today I talked to my mom, and she asked if I invited the third sister who lives in this area to my party. I told her emphatically that it was NOT a party. But she made me realize I can't have the others over without inviting the third, especially since she is the one I'm closest to.
I'm not too pleased. The house is a disaster and I have so much work to do! (To give you an idea: I've got as many project booked this month as I usually do in 3-4 months.) Peter is even less pleased than I. Of course once they are all here we'll have fun, and I'll be glad we all managed to get together.
I was going to go to the fireworks, but now I think Peter is taking the kids and I am working. The last time I went to the "big city" fireworks was pre-kids. We parked a few miles away and rode our bikes. I'm sure we were back to our car and on our way before the traffic had cleared.
BTW, I love those just the right size zoos. When my kids were younger, I even used to take them to pet stores. We had one nearby with lots of tropical fish, and the kids could easily spend an hour there.

Happy 4th of July eveyrone.
We had a grill out yesterday, listened to, watched some fireworks outside our front door before bed.
I spent the 4th camping with 2 friends- no kids.
Ew. I hate unintentionally having people over. It always happens at the most inconvenient times for us. :( I hope you got everything done and were able to enjoy the evening.
The zoo turned out to be an interesting experience. When we got there, most of the animals had wandered inside to eat, so we went to get lunch. A hot dog, semi-stale fries, and syrupy slushie (with a paper straw that got soggy before we could really use it) was almost $10! I suffered from a bad case of sticker shock. Next time, I'll just throw a bag of grapes, some crackers, and two water bottles in my bag. When we finished eating, the tiger was out. We went to see him and walked away just in time to avoid being sprayed along with the rest of the crowd! The sign did say to stay back 10 feet. Those poor people!
