Please keep my husband in your prayers!!

Hi guys! I know I haven't been here in a while, and I apologize. . . I hope everyone is well, and enjoying the new year!

I'm posting today to ask for prayers for my DH. For those of you who don't know me, he is an Emergency Medicine/Trauma physician, and he is getting ready to go to Haiti to provide medical relief to the earthquake victims. He flew to Boston last night to meet with a health care group that is mobilizing health care workers---especially ER and trauma doctors/surgeons---to go and help out. He flew home today, and is now getting ready to go. Amazingly, as much as they need volunteer doctors there, he actually had a hard time finding a way to go. I think things are just so disorganized right now, that they are barely getting triage set up in the remaining buildings. . . But he's perseverant ;) and he kept at it until he found a group that needed his expertise. He will fly to Miami tomorrow night, and then take a private plane commissioned to take him and the other health care workers down there---probably Monday.

Needless to say, I'm scared for him, but also proud. He was born to do this stuff---I think that's one of the reasons he chose ER medicine. He thrives on providing medical help in the worst circumstances. But aside from that, he does it for his faith, too. . . Anyway, he had to get an oral Typhoid vaccine yesterday (Which doesn't kick in for a while, apparently!); and also he began taking malaria pills. He is out getting iodine pills to purify his water, and filling a prescription for Cipro for dysentery! He was advised to buy mosquito netting to put over him when he sleeps! He is still hunting that down. It's not like it's sold in our local grocery stores!! Any ideas? LOL. . . He is also packing protein bars, nuts, etc. because he isn't even sure how he'll eat. And he's taking a sleeping bag, to be able to sleep on the floor wherever he is. He won't be at the Hilton, that's for sure!! No Caribbean luxury vacation here ;) He's pretty calm about the conditions he's about to walk into, but he is a little nervous about the water supply. It is hot there, and he needs to stay hydrated, and is afraid of getting sick and being unable to work. I told him if that happens, to just come home, but he's stubborn!

He went for 3 weeks to Baton Rouge and Houston after Hurricane Katrina, an experience he has never gotten over, both bad and good. But this is one of the poorest nations in the world. We are not talking the USA here! We are not even talking Italy or Greece (Both places we have been to in the past 2 years). The conditions in Haiti---on top of the poverty---are horrible right now. I'm not even sure I'll be able to reach him by cell phone, and I don't know how long he'll be gone yet, since just getting down there has been so hard for him. I'm truly worried underneath. I know he wouldn't go if I insisted he stay home, but I guess this is also *my* contribution to the earthquake relief. People are in desperate need, and my husband has the skill, knowlege, faith and determination to help them; and in comparison our family doesn't need him right now. Also---fortunately, my family, my ILs and my good neighbor are being just AMAZINGLY supportive. I'm in school right now, and being a single mommy will be so hard when I have to study. But they've all volunteered to help me with the kids and the house, so I have no real excuse except that I'll worry for Michael.

Please pray for him. . . And in asking for prayers, he has asked me to ask *specifically* for prayers for the people he encounters, and that God may work through his hands.

Thanks!! I'll keep everyone posted.

Many prayers for your husband, Sofia. I wondered if he would volunteer this time like he did after Hurricane Katrina. And you are *definitely* making a sacrifice yourself! God bless you both.

Lots of prayers for Michael, you, and your family. What a wonderful thing for him to do! I hope he has a safe trip. It has to be hard not knowing how long he'll be gone.

If he can't find mosquito netting, you might be able to find a mosquito netting stroller cover. I think I've seen them at Babies R Us. They are designed to cover the entire stroller and it has elastic around all edges. Ours is big enough to cover an adult. I think camping and outdoors stores would carry them. Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, and probably even places like Walmart that have a camping section should have them.

Please keep us updated, Sofia.
