Priestly Celibacy

This is a bit of a rant not over priestly celibacy itself, but how the media treats it - or maybe I just should say, how the media attacks it! This morning's paper was yet another column by one of our local (nonpracticing Catholic) columnists. She's seems to always take great delight in writing stories that can put the Catholic church in a bad light.

This morning's story was about the recent Father Albert Cutie who left the Catholic church last week (for the Episcopal Church for now as a layman in that church)after the highly publicized story of his involvement with a divorced woman in FL. One line in this particular column today really jumped out at me......"is the latest clergyman to reignite the debate over celibacy within the priesthood and call rather heart-breaking attention to the unreasonable demands the church places on its priests. It is sad that those that write Catholic religious columns for newspaper are rarely happy with their faith...

I agree that priests/nuns knew about the celibacy requirement and did consecrate themselves voluntarily... so it's annoying when folks make

Gee, that's not biased AT ALL, is it?

Someone doing the right thing and honoring their vows and making sacrifices is just not very newsworthy, I suppose.

I think the church knows what they are doing with the celibate priesthood.

Exactly my thoughts too about married clergy - though I'm not against the option if it were ever available to them at some time in the future. But certainly for all those reasons you mention and more, not an easy trying to serve "two families" and be everything to both. Already our priests are stretched thin trying to do everything that needs doing in a parish.

It really is frustrating to read things like that. I agree with everyone else. Celibacy is a choice they freely make. I can't think of one time I've heard of a current or former priest complaining about that requirement.

Wow, the outright open hostility that is allowed against Catholicism in our society, even to this day, absolutely astounds me. Where do you see writings like that regarding Judaism, or even Protestant denominations? That is just veiled bigotry.

I'm disgusted!!

All I can tell myself when I run into stuff like this is what my husband tells me (jokingly): "Well, they must just be really jealous of us" ;)
