We were in church this morning. Father Thomas had church today. He's always got good homilies.

This is why I drive so far to my parish.

At the churches here in my area, it's an absolute free for all....laughing, talking, kids running around, eating, drinking,

Please take the time to send him a note or an email or tell him in person how much you appreciate what he said today.

That's why I question my faith.

What a great thing for your priest to say.

Your parish is not the only one. Happens to some degree at mine too (and I'm sure - unfortunately- at many others). Our parish doesn't experience cell phones going off very often or at all, and the women/girls are dressed appropriately (might have something to do with the fact that our church has AC for the last four years so they know they'll be cold if not covered up LOL), our tabernacle is in the center of the church.

However some of my pet peeves (and these are specifically within the choir loft as a member of the choir) - the talking that goes on. It's like they're in the parking lot. People downstairs in the congregation also tend to chat a bit too - but it's very unnerving in the choir loft....almost as if since we're "up there" they're not actually in church. My husband and I usually avoid being drawn into this conversation before Mass by sitting way over to the side before Mass up there - away from the talkers. And our choir is not that large, only about 18 people when we're all there.

Recently during Lent the parish has started playing "quiet music" on a CD player before all Masses, probably I suspect as a way to stop the chatter before Mass. Not sure that it's working all that well. Yesterday I noticed a note on top of the CD player in the choir loft that said "Reminder: please play quiet music before ALL Masses". I've often thought wouldn't it be more effective for the pastor to just come out and say what Father Thomas did at your parish. Like - "Shut up - you're in church!" OK - maybe he wouldn't say exactly that - but it's what I feel like saying sometimes LOL.

Couple other pet peeves of mine that I most notice with two or three choir members: 1) chewing gum!! First of all I hate gum to begin with - any place. Certainly does not belong in church and not DURING Mass. And how can a person sing with gum in their mouth. Communion is brought upstairs to us by a Eucharistic Minister and the "gum people" remove their gum just as they pass by the waste basket as they go to the area up there where we receive Communion. 2) The other pet peeve is Altoid mints - or other similar - that again two or three choir members think nothing of having DURING Mass. These are always on top of the organ and these particular people stand right in front of the organ (resting their books on top of the organ). They even politely will look in my direction and offer me a mint etc. to which obviously I refuse. Doesn't gum and mints break the Communion fast???!!!!

OK - that's my vent of the day!

Technically, I think gum doesn't break the communion fast because it's not food.

I don't like when people leave after communion either. Drives me bonkers because then CJ pipes up that we should leave after communion and I have to explain to him why that isn't the right thing to do.

...I don't think leaving after communion is cool either...but, it's not a new thing...I can remember during the early 70s being jealous of the kids that got to leave each week early...
