An Indiana teacher claims she was fired from a Roman Catholic school for using IVF treatments to try and get pregnant.

I'm really glad to see you back! I still consider myself a "new" Catholic, so your thoughts really help. :)

I'm of the opinion that what she does in her private life is her business, whether or not she's teaching in a Catholic school. However, it looks like she's the one who told the school she was undergoing IVF treatments when she was using her sick days. If it violates a clause in her contract (as the article says), then the school was right to fire her. If one person in the office knows, then I think it's fair to assume the news would run through the rumor mills and eventually get back to the students. -And you're right, it would give an opening to discuss what IVF is and how it works to the older students. I wonder if they do that anyway. Ian is only in first grade, so I really don't know what the older kids are learning.

She was not Catholic, so not morally bound to the church teachings as a Cathoic would be. HOWEVEr, since she is teaching at a catholic school, and serving as a role model for Catholic children, then she should have made some effort to find out what the church teaches and do her best to abide by it. This ceases to be part of her private life, since she has made the knowledge public. As a parent who has probably spent $60K or more on Catholic school tuition over the past 12 or so years, I think it is fair to assume that my children would be taught by teachers who followed Catholic moral teachings. I would have been quite upset to learn that they had teachers who lived with their partners without benefit of marriage, for example. If nothing else, this presents a relevant opportunity for the junior high age and up students to learn what IVF is, and why the church teaches as it does on it. My 2 cents.
