Wearing roseries What I found out

I asked a question a long time back why people wear rosaries. Is it proper to wear one. Or is it just for praying on. I seen a mess of students at the college I work at wearing them this semester. Today I had to go to Time Warner Cable to swap out my cable box for a new one. They were upgrading the equipment. The guy who waits on me was wearing a rosary. I ask him why he was wearing it. Is he Catholic. He says he is not Catholic. It's a status symble. Showing his faith in God. Spirituality. I said do you know a rosary is just for praying on. Not really worn as jewelry. Or that is how it is in the Catholic church. He say Oh. I wasn't looking for him to take it off. Just was very curious why people were wearing them. I figured it was non Catholics wearing them. So that answered my question.
We have kids at school who wear rosaries, and generally speaking, the "badder" the kid, the more likely they are to wear a Rosary. We are talking 5th - 8th graders. I sometimes comment on them - some of htem are quite pretty - and ask if they know how to pray them (lots of Catholics in this area). Generally, they don't. One said, "Yeah... I pledge allegiance..." Most of them see it as a good luck charm that will keep them safe.
That being said, I went to a retreat in June where most people were wearing their Rosaries - including the priest. THe retreat was given by Immaculee, who is a native of Rwanda, Africa. I think, that perhaps, it is more acceptable in that culture to wear a rosary as a fashion accessory than in ours. And so while I was there, I wore my Rosary, too. But if I would put on my Rosary and go to 4:00 Mass at my local parish one Saturday afternoon, I'm sure that I would probably cause some of the little old ladies to go into shock. When in Rome....
