Were you ready? Did you decorate? Give gifts? Receive gifts? Make latkes? Post your Chanukah updates!

It's nice Chanukah falls late on the Julian calendar this year, because my kids are home from college. Our highlight, though, is giving the dog his present every night. I know, crazy, but I have to spoil someone, and he's so much fun! We say "Hanukkah" and he gets excited for his present. He sticks his nose in every gift bag thinking it's his, LOL! Enough about the dog...

We're visiting my husband's side of the family this weekend. Sat. night will be Hanukkah, Sunday will be his father's unveiling. Monday we'll be home and my family will be visiting for a Hanukkah "party". As the regulars know, thanks to Trader Joe's, there will be latkes!

I decorated with all of our menorahs, and I enjoy the vinyl window clings, adding one candle each night. I use one on the front door for display, and one in our kitchen for us. I haven't set out a bowl of dreidels and small toys yet, or a bowl of gelt, but I will for Monday. (Don't want aforementioned dog getting into them!)

Happy Chanukah! We went to a lighting downtown the first night. Ds (10) is at a party by the aide in his classroom tonight. Otherwise, nothing big. We had the family party Thanksgiving weekend. We got the kids a couple small gifts.

Most of ours is put away, just the garland in the upstairs hallway for dh to take down, plus my plastic tidbit dish being used for bathroom soap, but I have to wait for the bars to dry out so I can put them away ...

What happened when you tried to use dried chickpeas? I've never tried to use them before, so I'm curious. Was it bad?

Well they both came out sort of okay but sort of not okay.

After the first few falafel, they started to fall apart, then just didn't stick together in the ball shape at all. Everything I found on the 'net said to add more flour which seemed counterproductive to me. After all, it's liquid that makes meatballs stick together, right? So after I found a bunch of sites saying the same thing, I tried it and it worked, I guess. Because one site said the cooked falafel will be crispy and hot on the outside and creamy-smooth on the inside, but it didn't seem that way to me, they just tasted wrong. They looked great, though lol.

The hummus was also not quite right. Dh said we should keep adding oil, but how oily did we want it to be? So then I thought of adding dried tomatoes, or black olives, but although they tasted okay, it didn't look good ... It was too thick

I have made hummus with canned chickpeas, quite often, and it's delicious, so from now on, that's the way I will do it.

In peace,
Max
