My family never had gefilte fish as part of the seder meal, and so I don't serve it now that I'm hosting. My mother always figured that by the time we had a hard boiled egg, soup with matzah balls, the main course and side dishes, and dessert, dayenu! I'm not sure if my grandparents served it or not. I'll have to ask my parents this week!

So, I'm just curious? Gefilte fish - yes or no?

A definite yes! In fact, we do both gefite fish and a dollap of chicken liver (I know, those who remove all trace of fish before serving meat just cringed) on the same plate.

Typically our seders start off with:

Egg in salt water

Matzah ball soup

gefilte fish/chicken liver

salad

and then the main course and side dishes.

Nope. Nobody in my family eats it, and there are enough "ceremonial" dishes at the Seder without having a ceremonial gefilte fish.

my grandmother used to make both chopped liver and gefilte fish from scratch for the Seder. these days we skip the liver -- no one really likes it -- and we buy the forzen fish and cook it for the Seder.

I love it (my parents did) - but neither dh nor dd like it. Since my dh isn't Jewish he never had it as a kid - which I think is key to liking it! Oh well, more for me! ;-)
