Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha'Atzmaut
Mon, 04-15-2013 - 12:40pm
Today is Yom HaZikaron - Memorial Day for those who have died defending the State of Israel, followed immediately by Yom Ha'Atzmaut - Israel Independence Day (65 this year!). In Israel, a siren sounds for one full minute on Yom HaShoah and twice on Yom HaZikaron.  The country comes to a standstill - cars and buses stop where they are (even on the highways), people get out of their cars, stop walking and stand in silence for that minute. I've never witnessed it, but it must be amazing and inspiring to participate.

Many communities have celebrations for Yom Ha'Atzmaut. There will be a parade later this month in Philadelphia. Our synagogue has celebrations, especially in conjunction with the religious school.

Do you have any plans this year? Have you been in Israel during these events?
