3rd person talking?

Hi all I am new to this board but I have a question that is just getting to me. My DD is 4 1/2 yo and Talks to herself and answers herself. She will say things like "hey DD name (I do not want to post her name) why are you cleaning up the table? That is because my mommy lets me" and can continue this for some time. Is this something to worry about or is it normal?

Thank you

Joan

Totally normal, it's showing good conversation skills AND a good imagination.

If 3rd person talking is the only worrisome behavior you see, then it's probably not a big deal. If you see the 3rd person talking in conjunction with other worrisome behaviors, then it's probably more meaningful. If you DO see other behaviors, write down a list of everything you see and give the list to your pediatrician to tell you whether or not you should be concerned. Otherwise, it's probably not a big deal.

Thank you to both of you. It just seemed odd. DS never did this. He acted out scenes from movies etc. but never played both parts to his own story. LOL

Thanks again

Jane, I hope its normal because both my kids do it. My son is 9 and I will hear him talking up a storm when he's in his room playing with legos or working on a project. Lindsay not only will talk for both parts but will change her voice when she is pretending to be the other child or me. Apparently I have a high squeaky voice, lol.

I have 4 kids ranging in age from almost 10 all the way down to 2. My 3 older kids (ages almost 10, 7, and 4) have all done the 'talking to themselves' thing. My oldest has outgrown it for the most part, but my 7yo and 4yo still talk to themselves frequently. My theory? This is the age for imaginary friends....they're just speaking both parts. :P

It's good, though, that she's showing enough conversational skill at 4 1/2 to be able to do this. WTG Mom! :)
