Afraid of Band-aids
Fri, 06-08-2007 - 4:37pm

My 4 year old has developed a fear of band-aids apparently. We have had struggles with taking them off in the past but now she won't even let me put them on. Normally I wouldn't push the issue but she has a blister on her heel and is limping or asking to be carried. I have explained to her that it won't hurt and in fact make it feel better. I know this is a control issue with her. Does anyone have any good ideas as to how to approach this situation? I have tried bribery/reward.

Could you get those donut shaped cushioned corn pads which would relieve the pressure on her foot but not be a bandaid?

If your dd has fears over removing bandaids, they make bandaids for sensitive skin, and they also make "hurt-free" bandaid tape that comes in a roll like bandaid adhesive tape which can be used with gauze pads. My kids used to have more problems with bandaids (sensitive skin) when they were younger, but my older ones can tolerate bandaids better now. Perhaps if your dd had some bandaid alternatives for now, she could better tolerate regular bandaids later. They also make liquid bandaids for small cuts, so there's no adhesive to worry about.

Good luck!
