First Permanent Tooth

My DD has had her first permanent tooth pop through right behind her existing tooth. (It's one of her bottom front teeth.) The baby tooth is loose but I became worried when the tooth popped through behind.

Have any of you dealt with this? Is it something to be concerned with? Thanks in advance!

Hi Colleen.

The same thing happened to my son. The dentist told me that this is normally what happens however we don't usually notice it because the baby tooth falls out soon after it happens. With my son they had me wiggle it for a while (a couple of weeks) to see if it would fall out on its own. Philip was freaked by it wiggling that we ended up having to have the dentist just take out the baby tooth.

It happened to almost all of my now 14yo dd teeth. We waited and waited for her front teeth to get loose, but they never did, so they had to get pulled.

It's happened again with my 5yo dd teeth (she's lost two front teeth). Fortunately this time the baby teeth feel out on their own within a couple of weeks or so.

I don't remember how long our dentist told us to watch oldest dd teeth (a month, maybe?) before calling him back to get it evaluated. Just continue wiggling and watching your dd tooth. If it looks like it's getting looser over the next few weeks, you probably don't need to worry.

Now that you mention it I think it was a month they told us to watch and wiggle. Now he just wiggles them as soon as they start to get lose hoping they will come out so he will get a visit from the Tooth Fairy.
