Help! Car seat trouble!

Hello! I've not posted on this board before!

My youngest child is 3 weeks from her 5th b-day, and will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. She is still riding in a car seat, because she only weighs 31 lbs. I have read the recommendation is 4 and 40 before you switch to a booster. Kids in our state are in boosters until they are 8 yr. old.

She is insisting that her 5 yr. old b-day will be the end of the "baby seat" and on to a booster seat.

She is tall, well probably average for her age...but she looks tall because she's so skinny. They straps don't go "up and over" her shoulders yet, but if she grows any more they will.

I can't even imagine how long it will take for her to get to 40 lbs! She was big at birth, over 8 lbs, but has been very small since she was about 6 mo. Our other two were 40 lbs at age 4, so we never had this issue with them.

Do you have your 5 yr. old still in a car seat? What would you do? At what point is it just ridiculous to still have then in a 5 point harness?

Thank you for your feedback!

I go by height rather than age for switching between a car seat and a booster seat, provided they meet the weight requirements in both seats. They do have 5 pt harness booster seats if you are worried about her weight not keeping her in the booster seat.

My 9 yo (will be 10 in 3 months) was in a booster seat in the mini van until about 3 months ago because the seatbelt didn't fit right without it. He was able to sit in the backseat of the BMW fine since the summer he was 8.5, and the seatbelts in my gf's suburban fit him correctly as well. He has recently started asking when he could sit in the front seat next to me and I've told him not until he is tall enough for the front seatbelt to fit him correctly which will be some time. The law may say 12 yo but if he isn't tall enough when he's 12, then it isn't happening.

There's a car seat board at http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-ppcarseats. The ladies over there are very helpful, and they might be able to give some good advice.

Good luck!

A lot of boosters, esp the high backed boosters, are for ages 3-10yrs and 30-100 lbs, so I think you'd be safe switching to a booster now.

Good luck!
