So our other thread made me think about this...

How much do you pay your sitter? What's the going rate in your area?

Going rate in our area is about $10 an hour which I feel is outlandish! Its not like we are even in an expensive or affluent area. Luckily when the oldest was babysitting, I'd usually do things like fill her tank up with gas in her car, or pay for her hair appointments, stuff like that.

Holy Moly! That seems insane! Is that for your two girls? If that's the going rate, my poor sitter must be disappointed!

Yes, that is the going rate for 2 kids, I think 1 kid is still close to $7-8 an hour. Kids also just don't want to baby sit any longer. When I was looking for someone when my oldest was in school and I needed someone to just meet her at the bus stop and drive her to gymnastics 4 miles away and then bring her home and make sure she got her homework done while I was in school, just about everyone i spoke with wanted about $10 and this was 10 years ago! I know that took into account gas, but still. I eventually ended up switching things around and found a local girl through the counselor's office at the high school that was willing to watch her at our house for 4 hours one night a week for $20, but that was just to watch her at the house. That's part of the reason DH and I don't get date nights too often any more, between a babysitter when we can find one, and the cost of a night out, we're broke again!

zero we use grandparents or tit for tat. I took my sister kids on Friday because she had to work so she is taking them Saturday and its date night! My kids are 5 years apart and I would have a hard time paying the same rate for a 10 year old who is pretty self sufficiant just can't be left home alone yet let alone with a 5 year old.
