Hi, my neighbor is a high school senior who is very good with kids. She offered to watch my daughter for about 3 hours while my husband and I go out to dinner for our anniversary. I don't use sitters often and am not sure what the going rate is. She said just to pay whatever I thought was fair. What is your opinion? What should I pay an 18 yr old to watch my 4 yr old for 3 hours? We'll be out from 5:30-8:30. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

If you're going to use her often, I would pay anywhere from $4-5 per hour. If it's only an occasional thing with her, I would pay more, especially if it's only for a couple hours. If she's occasional, I would pay her $20 for the evening.

Ask your friends (or the girl's mother) what the going rate is. It varies WIDELY by region.

I would definitely try to ask around--another mom or another teen, a mom of a teen. In my area, the standard seems to be $10 for one child, $15 for two per hour, when it's grown women. Teens tend to be $10 for one or two kids. I just live in a pricey area.

I use the teachers from my kid's preschool for evening babysitting. I generally pay $8 to $10 per hour to watch my two kids. It is my rule of thumb to not pay less then the minimum wage to a sitter in any case. As another post mentioned though, babysitter prices seem to vary a lot by region.

Have fun on your night out!

I think you should also consider how much you expect her to do. Will she be giving your child dinner, bath, or putting her/him to bed, or will she just be hanging out with him for the 3 hours. I would take those in to consideration as well as you child's behavior. You know if your child is generally an easy child to deal with or one that would make most sitters cringe. LOL. pay her accordingly I think.

I would probably pay her $6 per hour (rounded up to $20 for 3 hours), that's about what I pay the 3 ladies who watch DD occasionally. I haven't read the other posts so I have no clue if this is low or high. I must add however that a friend of mine would pay a teenager much less than an older babysitter, and I do not agree with that. I'd also pay a little more if it were on short notice.

I give my sitters $2.50 and hour for Tre. If I had a second, I'd give $4.00/hr. After midnight I go to $3.oo/hr for Tre and with two kids, $5.00/hr.

I live in central Texas, and we pay about $6 - $7 an hour for one child. If thye have to drive over or take my DD out to the park or something we always add a tad more.
