and while it was a fascinating movie with gorgeous animation, I would have to say I don't recommend it for 5 YOs. Probably more for 10 YOs, I'd guess. DS got through it, and enjoyed it, and we've had lots of interesting conversation about it (over dinner in a Japanese restaurant!) but he was gripping my hand pretty darned tight throughout the first half an hour or so, and with darned good reason. Not a lot of fighting, etc. but a LOT of tension and many scary or disgusting surprises. Plus, you know how in the typical American cartoon, you can pretty much tell when a scary part is almost over and when some comic relief is coming? Probably partly because this is foreign and partly because it's so novel, you just couldn't get that comfort with this movie. It's almost impossible for me to describe it - it's somewhat similar in theme to the Wizard of Oz but makes the appearance of flying monkeys seem downright predictable, LOL! Other reviews I saw mentioned it being a bit like a Japanese Alice in Wonderland, which I can see too. I can't tell you how interesting it was to see what a Japanese fantasy landscape looks like - just gorgeous backdrops everywhere, and the music was great to listen to also. I don't want to give too much away, but the "messages" were good, if pretty difficult for kids this young. Also great to see such a strong female character. Again, a great film, but take your 10 YOs, not your 5 YOs, IMHO.

Thanks for the 411 Donna. Do you know its also coming out on video April 15? I got a notice from Amazon they'd be selling it & thought I'd buy it for my soon to be 7 yo dd. She watches Yu-Gi-Oh so probably wouldn't be scared by it & I haven't seen too many theatres near us playing the movie. Sounds like my 4 yo dd wouldn't like it tho.

Your timing is impecable! I was just thinking about taking my 5 yo this weekend. She is very sensitive to scary stuff, so I really appreciate your feedback. I had heard that the animation was really great so I wanted to see it, but will definately wait.

Thanks!!
