Does your child chew gum and can he/she chew it without swallowing it?

I'm only asking because one of Joshua's buddies can't seem to chew gum without swallowing it. I've given him gum on three diffent occasions and each time he swallows it. The first time I just figured it was by accident, the second time I gave it to him he ended up swallowing it again, and the third time I gave it to him I remembered too late. Right after I gave it to him the third time I reminded him not to swallow his gum, that when he was finished chewing it he should throw it in the trash. He swallowed it about 5 minutes after he got it. I ask him, "Billy", did you swallow your gum? Do you remember me telling you to throw it in the trash when your through with it?" I just get an "Oh ya" out of him.

Joshua has been chewing on gum for a loooooong time now (Shoot, my youngest (3 next month) has been chewing gum without swallowing it for some time) and I don't know why but I just figured they were old enough to know better than to swallow it. (He says he chews gum at home but I haven't asked his mom about it yet). So, I'm just curious, does your child chew gum without swallowing it?

My kids do and David (5) does too. Although I do have to say it took him longer to not swallow it. HOwever I have trouble with actually getting him to chew it for any length of time. It seems like he chews it just long enough for the taste to go away then tosses it. Or if he wants another piece, he tosses what's in his mouth.

Yes, my 4-1/2 yr. old can chew without swallowing. We just started with gum about 4 mos. ago and she's never swallowed it. JoAnn

Chewing gum here for a while with no problems. Can't really remember when they started, tho. I do know that some kids and even adults tend to have problems with stuff like that. Nothing major or anything, but more of a reflex-type situation......chewing, instinctively followed by swallowing.

Gabrielle has been chewing gum since forever it seems, and she spits it out after about five minutes of chewing or as I say when the shape is gone....lol

My 4 1/2 yr old DS has been chewing gum for a while now, and he does swallow it sometimes, but then... so do I! Actually, I almost always do. I know it sounds weird coming from an adult, but I just always have. Maybe it's a compulsion thing, like someone mentioned, I've never really thought about it. Never has hurt me, though, so I guess Mom was wrong about my insides sticking together. ;-) --->Dawn

LOL Dawn! You gave me a good chuckle! I know your right, it doesn't hurt anything (at least it never hurt me when "I" used to swallow it). I guess it's just my hang-up, y'know? Your not "supposed to" swallow gum! LOL!
