Learning His ABC"s

My son turned four in December. Becasue of his birthday being late I want to start teaching him his alphabets. He knows them by singing them but identifying with them his the hard part. Meaning reading. Am I as a parent being to hard to try and get him to read? I would like to get him into Pre-K by September. At this current time he is split between two homes since his dad and I divorce. His dad does not even try to help his son with his letters or numbers (which my son is picking up). What I do his give him flashcards and have him recite his letters to me and I do not get upset if he gets a letter wrong. I'm just glad to see that he is trying. Any how, am I expecting too much from my son who only been four for three months??? Please assist!!! He is my only mini me.

Hello and welcome to the board!

It sounds like you have quite a smart little boy at home.

Flash cards does help as long as you make it fun for him, but once he goes to school you will be amazed with how fast he will pick up on things. My baby girl started pre k at four this past sept. She didn't know everything but I'm amazed at what a teacher can do. Don't expect much or pressure him because its going to push him away from you with learning. Also try not to become fustrated.. good luck

We never used flashcards because I could never think of a way to make them fun.

I have something called a word whammer. it goes on the fridge. It helps them to learn the alphabet and spell 3 letter words. its awesome! My son just loves it! It takes batteries and it teaches them word games. i think you can get itat walmart. hope that helps!

There's a great free website that I use with my kids called www.abcmouse.com.

Sounds like your mini me is on the right track. Has he already been in preschool? I have my four year old write a row of each letter of the alphabet and she is finally getting all the way through. I think its great you are working with him, the more they know the better.

In my sons daycare/preschool they teach through playing. See the frog, frog starts with F, the frog is what color? Green starts with G. Like that
