Penis itching

My son is 4 1/2 (well almost 5 I guess) and can't stop itching his penis. He is actually itching it, not just playing with it. He was circumcised at birth, we've been to the doctor 3 times and they have put him on medication that didn't help (and altered him so badly I had to get him off it) and they've given him creams to rub on it. There is no rash, redness, discharge or anything visible. They don't think it's eczema. We are at wits end. He is really itching it, it's not just a love for touching himself. (believe me, we've had THAT conversation!!)

It's been going on for almost a year now. Every picture and home movie his hand is there. It interrupts his playing and people are asking and talking about him. Which makes him and us feel bad.

He's not wearing underwear anymore, we thought maybe the tighty whities were the issue. We've switched detergents, and he no longer gets soap anywhere near that area! He takes showers not baths, and we always shower off after we swim (but this goes on in the winter too, so I don't think chlorine is the issue), Even when he's naked he says it itches.

We need help and suggestions!!

Anyone deal with this? I kind of feel like the doctors aren't taking it seriously, and they just think he's playing with it, but I can see the difference.

Any ideas or suggestions would help!

Thanks

I second seeing a dermatologist. My ds has eczema, and his scrotum itches him fiercely. He has scratched it bloody, so no doubt it's truly itchy. I hate to cast doubt on your ped, but they know little about allergies/eczema. The dermatologist did more to help ds than any other doctor we've taken him to.

I am sorry that I haven't had any experience with this. It may sound silly, but could he have dry skin or a reaction to his sweat?

They don't have any idea of what may be causing it? Could it be an allergic reation to something? My bil can't use fabric softner either dryer sheets or the liquid kind otherwise he itches where ever his clothes touch his skin.
