Anthony T. DeBenedet and Lawrence J. Cohen, authors of new book called The Art of Roughhousing, say that roughhousing is important in fostering relationships.

So funny you brought this up. Roughhousing (AKA Wrestling matches in our house) are a nightly occurance. After dinner Mara tells her daddy, "It's time to wrestle! Get over here so I can take. you. down!" LOL it cracks me up every time!
Henry is still too small to wrestle with Mara (she doesn't know how to "take him down" gently), but he likes to gang up on Daddy with his big sister. It's so fun to watch them all laughing and pouncing on Jon.
Where do we draw the line? No hitting or kicking. And once someone cries (usually because they can't pin Daddy as fast as they'd like) it's time to take a breather.
Definitely some benefits: laughing, hugging, physical activity to burn off some energy before bathtime....and Mommy gets a break to clean up dishes without someone underfoot. :D
