My 5 yo daughter used to be a really good sleeper, and has slept in her crib since about 6 months old.

I find that my kids have sleep disturbances when they're going through a physical or emotional change. Physical is obvious - growth spurt, getting molars, etc. Emotional is harder to recognize though. I find when they're about to become more independent in some way, they often have this internal struggle of "I'm a big kid." versus "I want mommy." Of course it could be something like seeing something scary on a movie or tv show, or even hearing about something scary from a friend at school. It can be really hard to pin down.

I don't mind letting one of the kids sleep in my room for one night because of a bad dream. (The rule in our house is that they sleep on a blanket next to our bed though.) But we don't go more than one night or it becomes a habit that can be hard to break. I'd rather spend the time up front taking them back to bed and settling them in than trying to break a habit once it's become one.

Good luck!

Our 4 year old tries to sleep with us about 4 nights/week.
