DD scared of her pee/poo in potty!

Hi,

So glad to have found this board! I have a concern about my 17 (soon to be 18) month old DD's reaction to her pee/poo in the potty. About a month ago, we bought her a potty to just get her used to it being in the bathroom, not intending to start training - but maybe to catch a few BMs since it's pretty easy to tell when she's about to go. It didn't take her long to want to try it out, and she asks to sit on it more often than I would have thought she would. However, the first time she saw her pee and poo in there, she clung to me for her life, and would not go near the potty again until I dumped it down the toilet. She did flush it down herself, and told it 'bye-bye' LOL But, everytime she goes in it she acts like she's afraid of even looking at it. Although the weird thing is that she will clap and say "pssss" when she pees, but refuses to get up and let me dump it for what seems like an excessively long time - I'm guessing because she's afraid to see what's in the potty. So it's not just the poo that seems to scare her (which IMO WOULD be really scary if you didn't understand what it was! LOL) At least she isn't afraid to use the potty because of it, but I feel bad for her that she seems scared of what she leaves behind. Is this normal? TIA

Shyla, Hi and welcome to the oilet Teaching board.

Your DD is going through a stage that many children go through. Some children can feel as though they are losing something from them, and it can be scary. It will pass. Just keep reassuring your DD, and tell her everyone pees and poops. If possible bring her in with you so can can see that you do the same thing. Your DD sounds as though she is doing great. Please keep us updated on your DD progress.
