He can go, but he wont!

At one point last fall, DS was going pee on the potty a few times a day. Then it stopped, he did not want to go anymore, so I didn't force him. I thought If I forced him do it there'd be problems later.
We've continued to encourage him to go, and he has little since then. He'll be doing well, then all of a sudden stop and refuse to do it.
But he'll tell me when he's peed in his pull-up, or tell me when he's pooped.
WIth the pooping, he's done it twice on the potty, first time with no provoking to do it. Second time I encouraged him to do it on the potty.
Im not sure what to do. DH says, I should just decide when its time to go on the potty and put him on it. He said Im the boss and he should do what I say. He said I make too much of a big deal about it.
(All I tell DS is that it's time to sit on the potty, and I help him take his stuff off and he'll sit. Most of the time though, I don't get as far as taking his pants off because he's refusing to do it.)

What should I do? :)

Hi Stephanie,

Have you ever tried a rewards system with your son? Do you think he'd react well to one?

We have done the M&M reward trick too and it worked pretty well. DS (27 months old) still won't go unless I initiate, but he does go now when I put him on the potty. Initially he would sit for a bit, get off and then immediately go in his underwear/pull-up. He would literally hold his urine until he got off the potty. One day I just told him he was going to sit until he went. He sat for so long that he was literally doing the pee-pee dance on the toilet and then he FINALLY went. After that he seemed to realize that I meant business and started going. We have also been doing a reward box with small toys from the store for pooping on the toilet.
