Hi there,

Just getting back on ivillage and came across this board... OH DO I NEED THIS BOARD!!! My 3 1/2 yr old boy is a pain in my butt or rather a pain in his!! When it comes to potty training my first son was an absolute BREEZE! I put him in big boy underwear, he peed in his underwear once and that was it... potty training done! My youngest, COMPLETE opposite! He has the peeing down no problem but to get him to poop on the toilet is BRUTAL, he just WILL NOT DO IT!! He will poop little skid marks all day long weather he is in pull ups or underwear, its awful! I keep him in pull ups cause I'm exhausted with cleaning poop underwear all day long but then he just pees in his pull up too! If he's in underwear he will pee in the toilet but all I do is clean poop wedges ALL DAY LONG!

HELP!!! OH PLEASE HELP!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREAT!!!!

Thanks

Jenny

Ps. where do I get a new siggy? Mine is ANCIENT!!!

Is he holding it? The pooping little bits sounds like he may possibly have encopresis where a buildup of poo is pushing on his bowels, causing him to leak without his conscious control. How often does he have regular, big poos? I'm not an expert but this may be something he needs medical help with (a natural, nonstimulant stool softener to help clear him out) before he can get back to healthy potty training. I know you're tired of cleaning the poop but putting him in pullups really undermines the pee training he has done. I'd just get a wetbag and toss all his undies in there and then do a heavy duty load in the washer every other day. Little traces of poop wash out fine; cloth diapering mamas usually can't get ALL the poop off before the washer and the diapers come out fresh and clean. I don't see any reason the same wouldnt work for underwear.

You know you are ABSOLUTELY right about the pull ups!!! Underwear only starts in the morning, THANK YOU, I needed that! He has had major poop issues since he was born. Constipation has been awful for him! We have him on lactose free milk which helps and we use a stool softener as a part of his regular routine but he very rarely will have one big poop and just clear his bowels. Its brutal cause he just has little skid mark poops constantly! I really am at a loss with the poop situation. Any suggestions would be great! I am going to look up encopresis right now! Jenny ;-)

It sounds like he may need more help with the pooping, perhaps a higher dosage. I would make an appointment with his dr to revisit the problem and tweak the regimen he is on. From what you've said it sound like a textbook case of encopresis. Until his bowels are clear and have a chance to heal and regain muscle tone, he can't help the accidents. At this point the aim will be to establish daily healthy pooping and at least for now, you may have to let the potty part go if it's stressing him out at all. It is okay to let him ask for a diaper to poop in until he feels better about pooping. It still teaches bodily awareness (he has to tell you when he needs to go) and the difference between acceptable and unacceptable places to poop.Does he eat a lot of high fibre foods? If not then his diet may need tweaking to better support bowel health. All this is pretty much moot until he has regular bowel patterns established. Right now he has little to no sensation or control and simply can't help the accidents. I hope that helps and that you find some relief for the poor little guy. Hugs
