how do i get my son to want to go potty

My son is 33 months old. We have been working on potty training for a while, but are taking a break right now. My son does not want to go potty. He does not pee or poop on the potty, he wants to wear diapers. We are having another baby in December and would really like to get him trained by then.

We have tried pretty much everything I can think of. Rewards, running around naked, have him help clean up after an accident, give him toys only for potty time, and lots more. One time he sat on a potty and watched a movie and he actually peed in the potty. We got really excited and showed him how big of a deal it was, but after that nothing. And I really think that it was just an "accident" that he peed on the potty the. If I ask him if he will try to pee on the potty (cause he does sit on the potty) he always says no. I have not gotten him to pee on the potty ones yet.

I am concidering having him throw his diapers in the garbage in exchange for a gift for him, then he will know he does not have the option of going in the diaper. And then we will just have to deal with the accidents until he gets it down. I don't know if this might be a bad idea, but I really think that he could get out of diapers now if he only wanted to. So if I can get him to willingly throw his diapers away I hope that will make him eventually go along with it. I do think he is ready, and could use a potty if he wanted to, but it is so much easier to just go in the diaper so he cooses that.

Sorry about long message. Thanks for your time!

Hello,

Welcome to the board!

I know it can be frustrating when your child isn't training when you think they should be.

Hello TL.

As you have another child on the way,buy a smaller pack of diapers for the new baby and as soon as you use the last of his size, put on a to small size and tell him he has out grown them and he will have to use cloth training pants with plastic pants over them until he starts useing the potty regularily.

As an added insentive, when and if he poops in the pants, take your time at changing him,and take and stand him in the bathtub, strip him, have him help by cleaning his underwear (after you have dumped the main mess) and then clean him, taking your time with cool water,( not cold) telling him he could be playing now if he had used the potty.

This method normally takes no more than a couple of weeks at most.

Many Blessings.

Thanks for great ideas! I'm just putting in an update on how it's going. So we did offer our son to throw out his diapers in exchange for a gift, and he was very excited about it. Me made sure that he understood that it meant not wearing diapers anymore, but only underwear and going on the potty. And he was fine with that. Now he is very excited to be wearing underwear like a big boy. It is a slow process and obviously there are accident, but he tells us now that he has to go potty and runs to the potty. So he has actually taken his"throwing away his diapers seriously.

Now I am working on keeping him relaxed when on the potty
