Need some advice!

Landon (3.5) has been doing really well with potty training in the last few weeks.  He stays completely dry during the day and we only have the very rare wetting accident.  Problem is, he's only gone poop in the toilet two times.  He waits all day to go in his pullup at naptime and at bedtime.  I've tried leaving him in undies during his nap and he's stayed dry the last two days.  However, we've had no success staying dry at night.  This is fine, I don't expect him to pick it all up at once, but I am a bit frustrated trying to figure out how to get him to poop in the toilet.  The first time he did it we hopped in the car, went to the dollar store, and let him pick out a small toy.  I thought that would excite him to keep it up, but no such luck.  Any suggestions?

Hello jacobsandcoopersmommy.

pooping in the potty is one of the hardest for us to beat, this is one area that they have complete control.

Having said that, the pull-ups are your first things to go.

so long as he has them to fall back on,he will not see any reason not to use them.

as he is normally dry at night now, keep him in his undies and put a pair of plastic pants over them when going to bed, this will help control any accidents he may have and and let him know that he may have something he normally does not get when he uses the potty to poop in.

Maybe a small pop or ice cream.

I have sometimes used a plastic jug and gave a penny each time they used the potty and let them see how it grows, then let him buy what he likes with it.

I hope these help.

Please keep us up-dated.

Many Blessings.

Hi clmac,

Thank you for your reply. I too feel like he's waiting for that pullup, but my biggest fear is that he'll continue to hold in the poop, causing him to become constipated. After two days of holding it, I finally caved and put on a pullup last night and had to change it twice before he went to sleep. Sigh. I think I'll be making a sticker chart this afternoon to see if that will encourage him to go in the potty. I really (really!) don't want to keep using the pullups! I'll keep you posted on how things are going.

Thanks again!

To see the bright side of it, at least he's not going in his "good" underwear :smileyhappy:

What about having him try for a minute to go poop in the potty, then he gets a pull-up? After a week or two increase it to 2 min, 3 min etc. Then he's trying (or pretending to try) before he gets the pull up, might help get the concept across.

Something I have been thinking about is the fact that it might be hard for kids to go from standing or laying down to go, to sitting on the toilet. It changes things, and how it feels. Maybe ask if he wants to squat on the big toilet seat to go poop?

Just my thoughts, HTH a little maybe

That is totally one of the bright sides of this all! My middle guy would just go in his underpants and it was such a mess (that went on for months before he figured it out!).

I think you are totally right that it is hard for kids to go from standing/laying to sitting. I know Landon tells me he has to go when he's running around playing. Perhaps gravity helps? LOL!

Anyway, thank you for the idea about having him try for a few minutes before getting that pullup. As I mentioned, I'm terribly worried this will grow into constipation. He's so strong-willed, I have a feeling he'd hold it for days! That's a great tip and one I just may use!

clmac,

I'm wondering- do you know where you can buy plastic pants? I searched at Walmart yesterday but couldn't find any. I'd love to know where I can pick some up!

I've found them at one of my local Wal-mart's, but not the other. I've also seen them at Target as well. You could, if you do the online shopping thing, look for them on Amazon or other sites. I've seen them there as well.

Hello mommy,I find most of mine on E-Bay.

type in vintage plastic pants on the search bar,you can normally find many new in package ones,in most sizes.

I must admit,I have been using them for almost 40 years on all my young charges,so have quite a large number.

Good luck on your search,if you have to much trouble, please let me know.

Thank you both for your replies! I checked the other Walmart in my area and they didn't have them either. I did a search on Amazon and found them. YAY! They should be here by the end of the week. I'll keep you posted on how things go once we give them a try.

Hi all,

I wanted to stop in and post an update. Landon is now 100% trained- day AND night! It's amazing! I bought the plastic pants, put them on him, and that was it! Once he realized that he wouldn't be getting pullups, he figured it all out! He's never even had an accident at night! He wakes me up once to go potty, and then goes right back to sleep. Color me SHOCKED! I'm just amazed at how easy this was once we threw out the pullups. Thanks so much for all of your advice! It worked!

That's great Kristy, always love hearing success stories so early.

I hope you may be able to get some of the cost of the plastic pants back, didn't get much use out of them.lol

I hope you won't be a stranger, drop by and say high once in a while.
