My son is 28 months old and has been showing interest in using the potty.

First, daytime and nighttime potty training are totally different, so the fact that your ds is dry some mornings will have no bearing on how he does during the day.

As you said, your ds probably isn't fully emptying his bladder completely. You can try having your ds sit on the toilet a little longer. Also have him lean forward while urinating to put more pressure on his bladder to empty it better. Since your ds is peeing every 5-min, he may still be developing an awareness of his body's signals and trying to learn how to respond to them appropriately.

I know you said your ds doesn't care if he's wet. If he's wearing a diaper, he's not going to feel very wet since diapers have gel to wick the moisture away from the skin. You might want to get the thicker training underpants and some plastic pants (like what goes over cloth diapers). The underpants will keep the moisture next to your ds skin to help him develop a cause-effect awareness, and the plastic covers will help reduce messes in addition to keeping the moisture against ds skin (if you use the thick training pants, that will help reduce messes, too).

The good news is that your ds is excited about the process and is trying to cooperate. He will do better as he becomes more aware of his body's signals.

tally_mom_of_2, Hi and welcome to the Toilet Teaching board.

The previous poster gave your great information. My oldest DS did the same thing, the first day of training he used the potty 50+ times, each day it did get less, and after a little more than a week he was going longer intervals. There is a transition period, when they wear the diaper they go all the time, so it takes some time to retrain their bladder but it will happen. I would give it a few more days to see if there is any improvement, if not I would stop and take a break (a few days or a week or so), and then start over. There is nothing wrong with needed to take a break. I hope that helps. Please keep us updated on your DS progress.
