Question - 26 month old DD

Hello! My name is Katie and this is my first post on this board. My daughter, Becca, will be 26 months on June 25th. We have always had an open door policy with the potty in our house to get her used to seeing us use the potty, etc. She hadn't shown any interest in the past and has always said "NO" when I ask her. Until this past weekend she was dry for a while, like she always is, and so I asked her if she wanted to go potty and she said yes. Well, she went and stayed dry all day. The catch is that she has only told me that she has to go a few times. All other times I take her to the potty every 2 hours and she will go. Is this a bad habit to get into? Am I training her to wait for me to tell her to go? Do I just put her back into diapers and wait until she tells me she has to go? She wants to were big girl panties and tells me this. She meets all the "criteria" you read about to begin potty training. What should I do? She has had 2 accidents all week and they were both poop's.

I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks!

Hello klo0924.

Initiating is the last step in the training process.

Let her run around the house naked for a few house each day to get her used to seeing what happens when she gets those feelings, another thing is to set the kitchen timer for around the normal time she goes to the potty and race her to it,(letting her win of course).

As she is wanting to wear big girl panties, get a few pair of thicker cloth panties and put plastic panties over them, also pick out a package of her favorite character panties as a reward for when she gets trained.

As she is this interested,I would use diapers only at night time, even when going out,the thicker training pants with plastic panties will normally be enough.

Please keep us up-dated on what you try and her responses.

Many Blessings.

Thanks for your response. She has been in big girl panties since Monday. If she does have an accident, I don't mind cleaning it up. I have thick training pants that I got from One Step Ahead for when we go out. I think I am going to try this weekend to let her tell me when she needs to go. Will there be more accidents that way? And how long does it normally take to get her to initiate her going? My friends all say it happened quickly for their kids but some I know have had problems.

We started a week ago from today, and like you, haven't posted much on this board. I wanted to say that I just ask my daughter if she has to go and she usually tells me the truth or goes and stands in the bathroom (that is my clue that something is up). She has had very few accidents this week. She has even been pooping in the toilet. We only let her wear normal underware and she wears pull-ups at naps and nighttime. When we go out in public we don't leave until she has just gone and don't stay out longer than an hour or so. It's working for us. Oh yeah, and she is LOVING Elmo's Potty Time, I am not a big TV watcher but she is modeling what she sees, so it's good in my mind. We also have potty parties when she fills up her sticker charts. One sticker for pee and two for poop. Sounds like you are off to a good start, congrat's.
