Where do I go from here?? (m)

I am confused on where to go next w/ dd & her potty training. She's only 23 mos. but far more ready for potty training than ds was at her age. She can undress her self, knows when she has to go, will occassionally ask to be taken to the potty, & will/can stay dry for several hours at a time. I really don't like pull-up type training pants but wondering if I should go that route or would a few days in training underware help better. I have been very nonchalant because I don't want to push her to much either, but think that if I continue this way, I may be doing myself & her a dis-service, *especially* if she is ready.

Any help, tips, ideas would be appreciated. DS did not potty train until he was 3 so I have been a little caught off guard by this, in her.

Hi Terri,

If s/he is interested, go for it! If you don't you may miss your window of opportunity. The best advice I ever got - was to go w/ panties & nothing else (no pullups, diapers) even at nap & night time. Yes, the sheets will probably get wet and it's a little bit of a pain but what you'll eliminate is the 'need' for diapers. They are really smart at this age and if they know that they can wear a diaper/ pullup then that's what they want (b/c it's easier than going on the potty chair). Give that a try- it's worked for us.

I agree with Kathy that this is your window of opportunity. The potty training "window" is actually age 18 mos to 2 1/2. After that they get "dissinterested." However, to save on the laundry, I would start with "naked time" each and every day. Have her sit often, read or watch a video. Be an eagle eye in the beginning and if she starts to water the floor, quick pop her on the potty. A small reward for a potty success really helps. We used 2 M&M's. When she gets very good at this, after weeks or even months, you can go to step 2 which is training pants or underwear (NOT pullups) and the timer schedule. At this point, she'll wear diapers only at bedtime and naptimes ONLY until she can stay dry 7 naps/nights in a row. SET A TIMER for every 2 hours, after naps, meals and snacks. (More frequently in the beginning if needed, then work your way up.) Continue the schedule until she initiates on her own.
