Won't poop on potty
Mon, 08-10-2009 - 1:39pm

My son Aidan bring me here. He is 3 1/2, will be 4 in January. Anyways, Aidan is doing a great job peeing, no accidents recently. I trust him in big boy underwear However, he will not poop on the potty. He waited almost 2 days and than went today when i went to the gym babysitting room. He hides and went in his pull-up since i don't use underwear when we are out since he has never pooped. What do i do? If he was even just 3, i would leave it go and just wear underwear when we were home and put a diaper on him if he asks to go poop (he did this a little bit ago but than i guess he forgot about it. I really would like/need him in big boy underwear for school. Help anyone? Is this just a phase?

Unfortunately, poop potty training is just scary for some children. However, withholding poop is a bad habit that can create bigger problems down the road. Allow your ds to ask you for a diaper or pull-up when he needs to poop.

After several weeks of ds asking for a diaper to poop, choose a day to begin poop potty training. On the designated day, when he asks for a diaper, take him to the toilet instead. Since he'll have asked for a diaper, you'll know his urge to poop is strong, so take advantage of it. You can sit with ds, empathize with his fears, but insist he poop. Also have some prizes on hand to give him after he poops.

If you think your ds will try to withhold his poop again, a couple of days before you begin poop potty training, begin giving him a daily dose of a mild stool softener type laxative to make ds poop softer and more difficult to withhold. Some good products are Miralax, Benefiber, Milk of Magnesia, Fiber Choice (with inulin) and mineral oil.

Good luck!

This is a very common problem! "Wont poop on the potty" is actually a top google search.

My son was about your sons age exactly when he finally started going. I had given up. He would always go at night (the only time I put pull-ups on him) or he would come to me and say "I think I need a pull up on" and I would try everything to get him to sit on the toilet but he wouldn't.

Finally one time he came to me and said "I think I need a diaper on" and for some reason I decided to (kindly) threaten him with a spanking if he didn't sit on the toilet. He said "okay", and then I gave him LOTS OF PRIVACY and closed the door. He went in the toilet! After that he was basically trained.

I don't know how much help I am but I thought I'd respond anyway.......
