22-month old woes

Hello All!

I am the mom (and former member of the August 2011 PG) of a 22 month old boy who is very active.  He's language skills are slow in coming, so we have a difficult time understanding him.  He has the standard (almost) 2 year old behavior problem: hitting, kicking, biting and pinching.  I think that these behaviors are tied to his langage skills, as I know he understands us perfectly, but he gets frustrated and mibehaves.  He beats-up on my (very passive) 5-year old son all the time.  I am having a hard time finding a solution to these issues.  Does anyone have a suggestions?

Also, the he is showing all the signs of being ready to potty train. Since we have a difficult time understanding him, I am not sure I will understand when he has to go to the potty.  Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought of trying to use baby signs, but I never used it before and wasn't sure if it too late to start.

Hi there,

I know first hand how hard it can be when your child is having trouble with expressive language.  Have you ever thought to have him evaluated by a early childhood program in your area? Usually they will test him for free and if he qualifies, he could get free speech services and/or preschool while he works on those skills (my oldest two both went through this and it was a great program that really helped them).  You are probably right about the hitting/biting issues being caused by his language issues.  It must be so frustrating not to be able to express your wants/needs!  I think baby signs are a GREAT idea if he is ready to potty train.  In my opinion it is never too late to start and it may be a great tool for him to use while he works on his language skills.
