How does your 2/3 yr old do with teeth brushing?

My son loves to brush his teeth, but we are still working on getting everywhere clean. I have to help some, but we bought a no flouride toddler tooth paste that is strawberry flavored and he likes it a lot. I have to coach him through it each time to make sure he actually brushes and not just suck the toothpaste off...lol. It is actually one of the things I don't have to battle with him on!

I bought low-flouride toothpaste and my daughter would suck it off the brush then ask for more...over and over again. I got to the point where I would just kind of stick the bristles into the toothpaste tube so there was only the tiniest hint of toothpaste on the brush, that way I could guilt-free let her repeat the application 10 times. Then I switched the low-flouride paste for no-flouride stuff and began giving her flouride supplements instead so I have a bit more control over how much she is actually getting. But she hates the taste of the no-flouride paste and will no longer allow any brushing at all...so...I guess I'll give it another week and if she still won't accept the new paste I'll get the old stuff back.

She is a super picky eater, I was surprised that she liked the old toothpaste when she won't even touch frosting on cupcakes. So it was overly optimistic of me to think I could just switch flavors. But of course now I have to live in fear that colgate will stop making that one particular flavor that she DOES like, or else stockpile enough for years to come...

I'm so jealous that you don't have to battle him with brushing teeth! I swear I have to practically hold Landon down to get his teeth cleaned! Maybe I need to look into a new kind of toothpaste. Do you remember what brand you have now?

Yep- sounds like I need a new toothpaste! Maybe I'll take him with me to pick out a new kind/flavor. Thanks for sharing! I'm glad your daughter found some that she likes. Hopefully as she gets a little older she'll be more adaptable to a different flavor or brand. OR, hopefully it is so popular that Colgate never stops making it! :)

Hi there -

So it's not the tooth brushing itself that DD fights with.

You are welcome! I hope your DD does well at the dentist. Landon actually loves going to the dentist. He'll sit super still and let them clean his teeth and gives them no problem at all. Of course the balloons and prizes at the end don't hurt either!

My kids do not complain about brushing teeth. I have no idea if it is b/c we introduced it at like 2-4 months (starting with just a rag), or if I'm just lucky.
Anyway, I have a couple of recommendations:
1. try to use a timer so they have something to watch as you brush their teeth
2. let them pick out their toothbrush from the grocery store
3. while you brush your kid's teeth, give them a toothbrush and let them brush a baby doll or stuffed animals teeth
4. i sing a song while i brush teeth so that i know we do it long enough.

Thanks for sharing your tips! I do like the song idea. I think I read someplace that you sing th Happy Birthday song two times and that is how long they should brush. What song do you sing?

My son loves to do it all on his own but i still have to help him with it to get the spots he don't lol. I've got him off the "safe to swallow" and now he rinses too! It was a big achievement for us =)
