Sleeping issues with my 2.5 yr old

So, my DS will be three in Sept. And were expecting out second in December. my issue is that DS has decided he doesn't want to stay in his bed all night and he also wants me or my husband to stay with him to put him to bed...this coul be 10 mins. Or 45 mns.
He never really learned to self soothe as a baby. from the time he could stand in the crib til about 18 months when we'd try to let him cry it out he'd make himself throw up. EVERY night this would go on until I learned a trick to stop it...blowing in his face. anyway we missed the window and we struggle getting him to sleep on his own.
I've recently started timing it, and saying mommy will stay for 5 minutes and trying positive reinforcement...but it takes a while.
He's in a twin bed with a rail and he does nap from 1-3' is up around 6am and bedtime is at 8. We have a bath, pj's, and then book time routine before bed...
Any suggestions?

Hi, first off had to say that as I have never posted here, and havent been to ivillage since son was a year old. We are at a lilttle over 3 now.

I just wanted to say I really just got my son to sleep alone in his own bed. I still lay down with him every night and read or just lay there until he goes to sleep. He isnt a good self soother and rubs my arm to relax. It is hard when I am not there for him.

I've wondered that too...but he is really tired at 1 and always goes down quickly for a nap. Ijust figuredhe still needed it. Bit its a thought. Not sure i'm ready for that! Hedid sleep through last night...not sure I did much different but i did leave the room before he fell asleep.

Around that age, my daughter started doing the same thing. She would crawl into our bed in the middle of the night, then it turned into us having to lie with her in her bed for hours. Finally, we just decided to keep putting her back in her bed over and over until she got the hint. It was super frustrating, and she still tries every so often, but she eventually got over it and is sleeping much better.
