caffeine before OV?

My question relates to caffeine. I've read everything I can find. I completely understand that once trying to conceive, it is best to strictly limit or give up caffeine, and I intend to. BUT...being a HUGE coffee lover, I want to know if it is "safe" to drink up until a few days before ovulation. Then stop for OV and the 2ww? Has anyone heard anything? I am going in for my first IUI later this week. It is okay that I enjoy my java until, say Monday? What do you think?

I don't know for sure, but I tend to err on the side of caution. I know that, during IVF, my nurse told me to treat my body like I was preggo before I started stimming (which is pre-O).

I like my caffiene, too. I helped me to remember that those were calories I wasn't consuming! :)

Thanks...I had a half cup today and plan to forgo it altogether tomorrow. A couple weeks is no problem, but I just keep thinking, depending on how many cycles we have to end up going thru I may not be enjoying Starbucks for quite some time! A BFP will make it all worth it in the end - I know. Thanks for your input! --Tracy

I also agree with the others.

I agree with the others that giving up caffeine is a good idea. But I have heard that going "cold turkey" is a bad idea. You might want to talk to your doctor about it, but I've heard that phasing it out is a better idea.

Caffeine is very detrimental when trying to conceive. I weaned myself off of it and am glad I did. I would not drink it at all if you are trying to get pregnant, not even in small quantities.

Hi Tracy,

I would say to cut it out all together. I have done quite a bit of reading on the subject as well, being a coffee/diet coke/diet dr. pepper lover myself. Once we made the decision that we were going to have a baby, even though we werent officially trying yet (in December) I cut out all coffee, caffeinated sodas etc. I also do not have any diet soda as they say aspartame is not good for you either. I do still have some chocolate here and there, but not enough to be harmful. Studies show that caffeine can really affect fertility, so I would be cautious.
