considering donor egg

hi all, my name is Lynda and I have decided to come here to gather some additional information regarding donor egg/IVF. I am 44 years old and have had three miscarriages in the last two years. My OB says it's because I have older eggs and the quality of my eggs are not good due to age. I didn't believe her at first, but now after three losses, i'm coming around. I have recently decided to research the donor egg program. I knew the procedure would be costly, but i'm actually pretty shocked at how expensive it is.

I guess I'm hoping some of the donor egg ladies here will share their experiences with me. The clinic I spoke with has a %78.7 success rate with their donor egg program. If you got pregnant using donor egg, how many cycles/attempts did it take for you to be successful? how did you chose a donor? is the donor annonymous? what are the legalities of the donor trying to claim the child at a later date? any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks
Lynda

I live in Atlanta and went with my RE for the donor program. They do not have a shared program and I didn't investigate if there are other places like Shady Grove in the area because we were comfortable with our clinic. Also they were doing a clinical study on the freezing so we participated in that and got a discount on the price but the fresh donor program, with no guarantees and no refunds, is normally $27k of which $6-8k goes to the donor. Each additional transfer of the frozen embryos is $4k. We paid by credit card and some savings. We do not have insurance coverage for infertility. We thought this was a better investment for us versus adoption which can cost the same or more and can take years and may never result in a child. We also wanted the option to experience pregnancy and of course use my husband's sperm to have at least partial biological relation. I have been told that my eggs are just too old and are incapable of developing to term based on the quality due to age.

Hey Ruth and Matte, great to see you gals!!!! Ruth, i'm glad you posted and I will be posting much more here!!! I have made the decision to do this. It's just where/which clinic... I'm glad you are proceeding and can't wait to share your journey with you. I am very excited!!!

Matte, I am trying to raise extra money too. My DH is on board with this, but he is worried about the money. He started his own business in this crappy economy and I think he's just worried. But we will find the money!!! forsure!!! I can't wait to hear about all you have going on!!! Have you found any good ways to make extra cash? i've been selling on ebay, but their fees are killing me.

I wanted to thank everyone for your responses. You have made me feel very very welcome!!! I am so excited about the possibilities the future holds. I'm so sick of hearing my crappy odds with my own eggs. I am ready to move on to "hope" - cause i've seen to have lost all my hope using my own eggs. I am considering the SG Program. It seems very inclusive. They seem to have great success rates too.

Yes the clinic i was looking at charges 26,000 for FOUR fresh cycles, but you have to pay the donor fees of 10,000 for each additional fresh cycle beyond the first one. so if it took you all four cycles you would pay 56,000 - very pricey!

Thanks again for the infor and for the warm welcome!!!!

Lynda, my dh started a new venture as well. We've been a little stressed, but as with you - we are over all the gloom & doom and want to do something we have good odds with!

I'm Laura and I am currently working with an egg donor agency as a donor. I'm about to start taking all of my meds/injections next week to prepare my eggs for retrieval next month. After everything is complete it is going to cost the recipients around $20,000+, which is a lot of money to most people. I am willing to donate my eggs to a happily married couple without an agency to save you thousands of dollars. Of course, I still want to be compensated my time. An attorney will need to be hired to draw up legal documents releasing me of all parental rights if a child is born.

I have been with my husband for 11 years, married for 3, and we have a beautiful goofy 17 mo old son. I had a fabulous pregnancy and enjoyed every aspect of it. Luckily, we were able to conceive within the first week of trying so I cannot imagine what it's like to not be able to conceive. A few of the mothers at my son's school used egg donors to conceive their babies (twins) and their stories
