Frozen Egg Use on the Rise

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine has taken the "experimental" label off of frozen eggs, which should help stimulate the use of frozen eggs as donors instead of using fresh eggs, reports CNN.

Egg freezing technology has improved so much that in the past six months, egg banks have started websites where patients can order frozen eggs and have them shipped. Fertility experts say it constitutes a paradigm shift , and they predict that in the not-too-distant future, nearly all donor eggs will be bought frozen online instead of fresh locally, making the eggs more accessible -- logistically and financially -- to more women.

You can read the complete article at: http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/22/health/frozen-egg-banks/index.html

How do you feel about this shift from using fresh eggs to frozen?  Would frozen eggs make the donor process easier for you?

I know 3 of us have used frozen eggs at Shady Grove, and all three of us had sucessful cycles. I was one of the first few frozen egg cycles at SG, and at that point it was obviously still experimental and as such, there was a discount compared to fresh. Now the cost is higher, a surcharge on top of the usual shared risk pgm, I guess both bc of the convenience (no need to synchronize) and the certainty of getting your eggs (no guarantee in a fresh cycle on how many eggs are produced, and in a shared cycle if you're the second or third recipient you can get cancelled). I'm glad I got in before they took the experimental label was taken off -- both bc I like being part of that cutting edge and bc it was nice getting the discount! Definitely the wave of the future!

I saw that article on CNN too, and I was excited by it.  Dr. Sher had spoken to us a few years ago about frozen eggs/egg banks being the way of the future as far as DE, and now it looks like it's on the rise.  I moved recently and have a couple of consults set up with RE's over the next few weeks, and I will definitely ask them if using frozen eggs might be possible.  It has some benefits and drawbacks, but I'd be willing to try it.

Me: 36 DH: 35 TTC for 6 + years.  2007-2011: 3 fresh IVF and 2 FET with own eggs; all BFN.  2011-2012: Switched to DE; 3 chemical pg's.  2013: Moved to TX; starting DE cycle w/new RE.
