SG donor database

Hello
Well, we were approved for the 1:3 program for Shady Grove, and were assigned our username/pw. We were disappointed to see that there were only 12 donors total of all races in this program - surprising because when I was given a temp password there were 40+ - including one who was my exact ethnicity (mixed asian/caucasian) & body-type (5'7", medium build.) Of these, there is only one who could be passable - but I don't want to pick someone just to pick someone. I don't want to sound cruel - but really it looks like these women are not the caliber we had hoped - heavier, shorter, older, less athletic. Did anyone else have this experience with SG? Did waiting a month help? Does anyone have an idea how much the pool increases if we pay the extra $9K?
Thanks

Susan

Hi again Laura
I know there are many women on this board that think SG is great- I have had very mixed experiences with them over the past 2 years.
Don't worry if you like or don't like the doctor, you probably will only see them once or twice during your treatment. During my treatment, I often felt like a number, with the long waits (both in the waiting rooms and between cycles) and the only by the book attitude, and the constant having to call them to get information. But overall, they are helping families, so that is a good thing, they are pretty much the only game in town in DC, and it seems like the only game in town for much of the country for the donor egg program.

I am not sure if you saw my other post, but the database is pretty palsy in the 1:3 program. For example, the last three weeks there have been only about 7 to 12 women available, 1/3 of them frozen embryos, 1/3 African American, & 1/3 Caucasian (no Asians, mixed race or Hispanics) So if you are Caucasian, and want to have a fresh cycle, there have only been 2-3 to choose from. When I initially looked at the database to test, there were 40+ women, most of whom, I am presuming are in the 1:2 or 1:1 programs that are $10K - $15K more, I felt like they were doing the bait and switch a little bit.

I don't want to discourage you, by any means, I just don't want you to have further disappointment, as I did. We found a donor who we can be happy with, but we had to be a little more realistic about the check list. We are the tertiary recipient, and she is a new donor, so I am hopeful that she makes plenty of eggs so we can go forward, I would hate to have a canceled cycle after all of this. As I am sure you know, every month that goes by it gets harder and harder - and we've been trying for over three years, and I am about to stare down 40 candles on my bday cake...

Wishing you much luck on your journey to parenthood
Susan

1-3is all I can afford I am turning 42 soon and I a freaking out. I am afraid this could take a while but here in NY it's 32,000 for 1 cycle and your left with any remaining frozen at 5000 a shot. Too much I just hope I can find a donor. I saw a new one on there could be good but I haven't even been there yet lol. It's all very upsetting. I hope this is ur cycle Good Luck! Talk to u soon

Laura,
I'm also in NY and after a failed shared cycle with Cornell (and a loss of $20K) we really had little choice but to go with a shared risk program and Shady Grove.

I didn't mean to upset you further, I think the Shady Grove program is good, especially at the cost - which is why we went donor IVF instead of using my own eggs - I am six months too old for that program, even if we thought it would work. It will probably be six-eight weeks before you are at the look at the donor site- the donors you are looking at are for all the programs - so don't get your sights set on a particular one until you have your personal code. I made that mistake, there was a woman my exact ethnic makeup, height weight, blood type, and I got very excited only to find out she is only in the 1:1 program
good luck w/ all your pre-testing

Hi! Good to see you again ! We went to the Frederick office to start off--that's where we met our awesome RE Melissa Esposito---all tests and transfers are done in the Rockville office. Where in NY are you from ? I think someone initially flew the shuttle down to washinton National and took the subway/MARTA to the Rockville station and SG came and picked them up.....good deal if you can get a cheap fare. Good Luck !!!

Just a note to all who are looking at the database...I DO remember that in the summer their data base really went down because women got busy and didn't sign up OR women don't want to cycle in the summer......my 2nd donor wanted to wait until the end of August to cycle because she had vacations to attend to...............just my 2 cents...

I had the same experience with SG once we started exploring DE options.
