Using donor sperm and Canadian?

Hi. I have been lurking here for a while, but I have not posted. I am full of questions, and would love if you would share your experiences with me.

I am considering TTC#2 and using donor sperm, but the costs here are outrageous. 1500 for two vials. My RE does two 2 IUIs two days in a row. They have told me that the sperm originates in the US (I think some of it comes from Cryogenics in Maryland) but for the life of me, I can't figure out why the cost is more than 3X what some American women are paying. There is shipping of course, but I don't think we have to pay duty on sperm!

I think part of the reason for the high costs are what I call morality taxes -- like there is something unethical, amoral or downright sinful about needing a donor, so we need to pay for it. Three things we can't get in Canada: diet cherry pepsi, fruit stripe gum and sperm.

Does anyone know of cheaper alternatives for getting an anonymous donor? What about ordering it online? I would love to have your feedback (whether you are American or Canadian). Thanks.

I don't know of any cheaper alternatives for sperm, but I could suggest that you think about taking a vacation in the U.S. to do the D.I. - if you live close to the U.S. border, would that be a problem? I myself have seriously considered doing IVF in Czech Republic, because its much less expensive there, and with the money we save, we could have a nice vacation while we are there.

Thanks for that advice Tess. I do live close to the US border -- even if I went there and bought it and brought it back I am sure I could have all my procedures here. My next round of IUI is scheduled for Nov 9 (CD1) so If I don't have any success on IUI five, I will look into sperm donation and going directly to the US to get it.
