When you're looking at a profile, which items do you look at most closely?

Appearance?

Ethnicity?

Education/achievement?

Outside interests?

Personal medical history?

Family medical history?

Other?

I was browsing some profiles and there's a lot of information there, and I'm not sure how I should start the process of choosing a donor (we're not at that step yet, but looking ahead).

This is much more fun than what i'm doing @ work...

I looked for a young, proven donor who has her own children. ***This was our key and most important criterion***we went with a repeat donor because we knew they would take their meds. Our donor is 22.

I wasn't super picky about size but taller was better (I'm 5'8). My donor is 5'7.

A great piece of advice I was given was to put down "musts" and "nice to haves" on a list.

We were pretty open-minded. Besides the obvious health stuff that we assume is okay if they make it through the screening, we just wanted caucasian, a proven donor, and brown hair/brown eyes. Everything else was good to know but not essential. I felt uncomfortable getting too specific- it felt like I was custom-designing a baby like I would a car or something...ugh. I figured even if it was biologically related to me, you are never guaranteed anything and your child is their own person.

We looked at education, musical talent---singing , because I was an opera performance major in college, and medical history. What was most important was the medical history for us..... we wanted to avoid certain diseases that can be hereditary. There is no hx of diabetes or CF in either one of our families and we didn't want to introduce it.
