What to expect @ new patient DE appt...

Hey gals-

To give you a little background... DH and I did one cycle of IVF/PGD and learned that my eggs don't fert in IVF. (Happens to about 1/2 of female Fragile X carriers.) So, we did some research on both DE and adoption (and sought advice/opinions/experiences of a few...even some here!) and have decided that our next "try" will be IVF w/Donor Egg at a new clinic.

DH and I decided to go the DE route after I miscarried our first child at nine weeks. I was 44 years old, DH was 46, and we wanted to try again right away. I knew the odds of conceiving with my own eggs was very low (two percent or less), while the odds of success with a donor were around 50 percent. So, although many couples struggle for a long time before reaching this point, for us the decision to use DE was a no-brainer.

We had a few setbacks. It turned out I had uterine fibroids (which may have contributed to my m/c) that had to be surgically removed. After I healed from surgery, we chose an anonymous

Thanks, Kim Sue! We also found out that adoption would be pretty invasive. For that reason, and many more, we're excited about doing DE.

How did you go about picking a donor at your clinic? Did they show you available donors or did you fill out a form w/the traits that you wanted in a donor? It all seems so trivial in the whole scheme of just trying to build a family. I'm curious about how my clinic will do this and what other ppl's experiences have been.

Our clinic provided us with a password that enabled us to browse potential donors online. We had probably 60-70 to choose from. Most of the profiles contained photos; all featured pertinent info like height, weight, hair and eye color, ethnic background and health history; all were anonymous. We gave a higher profile to a good health history than we did to looks or even education level. Donors who already had children also got a second look.

60-70!!! WOW!!! Seems like our nurse told me on the phone that they have 30-40 current donors. Still not bad though. She predicted a 2-3 month wait. (I'm not sure if that's based on split or non-split cycle.) We'll find out Friday. I've heard that proven donors are a plus. That's something we'll definately look at.

Thanks for sharing your story! :)

Hello -

Our experience was a good one once we finally decided after many tries to go the DE route.

Thank you for your story and encouragement! We went to our appt Friday and left feeling *so* good about doing this. We really liked the RE and the staff. They're giving us a 70% chance w/DE, so I'm sure we'll be doing this soon. The DE coordinator (nurse) gave us about 40 profiles to look at and wanted us to let her know who our five favorite were. Wow! DH and I sat
